When toasting in Austria, it’s a tradition to make eye contact with your drinking buddy. So if you ate a little too much at dinner, it’s a good excuse to take a shot of Schnapps. They commonly drink Schnapps before, during, or after a meal to help the stomach digest food. However, Austrians rarely mix their Schnapps into cocktails but instead drink it straight out of the bottle or in shot form. People in the US usually mix Schnapps in cocktails. You can also make Kirschwasser (cherry water) or Marillenschnaps (apricot brandy). You could also try Poire Williams (William’s pear), a type of Schnapps made with pears. Zwetschgenwasser (plum water) is Schnapps made with a variety of plums. Apples are used along with pears to make Obstwasser (fruit water). There are many different types of Schnapps. Afterwards, the mixture is bottled and stored in a cool place for 3-5 days to let the taste stabilise. Collection of the liquid happens in a distillation still. ![]() The mixture takes between 20 and 45 days to finish fermenting. The liquid is then moved to an air locked pot and placed in a warm area. Once the fruit starts to ferment, they add several litres of water to the mixture. Home-brewers do not wash the fruits as this takes away the natural yeast needed to ferment the fruits. However, there are a few differences in the two processes.Īfter the fruits have been harvested, they are seeded and mashed. The process of making Schnapps is very close to that of moonshine. It tastes similar to a light-flavoured vodka. Schnapps is a strong and often clear distilled spirit. Schnapps is a distilled spirit made by fermenting fruit. Maria Theresa’s plan was a success in generating income for the state and sparked Austria’s long-standing love of Schnapps. Austrians began to make alcohol from their home-grown fruits and berries or those found growing in the wild. Land-owning farmers were permitted to produce an additional 100 litres. The sole female Empress of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire saw that the production of fruit brandies was a goldmine for generating revenue and as a result would add to an increase in tax for the government.ĭuring her reign in the 1700s, the late Empress legalised the production of up to 200 litres of distilled alcohol per household annually. Marie Antoinette’s mother, Maria Theresa is also responsible for the increase in popularity of Schnapps in Austria. During harvest season, people transport a communal mobile pot by horse and cart for households to share. These pots made the distillation process easy. ![]() In the 18th century, distillation of Schnapps became widespread due to the invention of the copper pot. With most undistilled water leading to illness, the Austrians began to convert fruits into alcohol. Just like the Czech Republic’s national drink, Becherovka, history shows that Schnapps also became popular for its medicinal qualities. Most fruits in Austria do not possess a sugary sweetness when in a non-distilled state. The Ancient Romans brought the art of fruit cultivation to Austria where fruits could easily grow in the Alpine regions.Īustria has the perfect blend of cold weather and sunshine to produce fruits high in acidity and aroma. ![]() However, if you’re watching movies or listening to music, audio will sound thin and lackluster, even after you make equalizer adjustments through the included Dolby Atmos software. Unfortunately, the set of speakers is one of the laptop’s two major flaws. The 720p resolution is noticeably grainy, but it’s good enough for making video calls and conferences. This is a major upgrade from the 2017 model to help minimize blur and make up for dropped frames. The display also boasts a 144Hz refresh rate, which you don’t typically see in budget gaming laptops. ![]() It has true-to-life color reproduction, with stronger blue and magenta hues that we like better than warmer tones for gaming and watching movies. Other than that, we’re pretty happy with the 1080p display. Acer's Predator Helios 300 remains a good value among 15.6-inch gaming notebooks, but doesn't stand out in a fiercely competitive field. We could do without the thick, 1-inch bezels. Yet the Full HD display is unexpectedly fantastic for a laptop of this kind. The camera could be better and the sound … let’s just say there’s definitely a lot of room for improvement. Here’s another example of the underlying theme in this gaming laptop. This issue usually fixes itself when we restart the laptop and disconnect the mouse. Plus, we have run into the issue of it being non-responsive or erratic when we have a mouse installed. The touchpad is also a little tight when you’re pressing down. You’ll want a mouse if you want accuracy and responsiveness, like with most gaming laptops. Like with most gaming laptop touchpads, this one’s definitely not good for gaming, though it is responsive enough for productivity tasks. The touchpad is a slightly different story. We find that when we’re using the arrow keys for gaming, we often miss the ‘Up’ arrow key because the ‘Down’ arrow one is taller than we’re used to. Our only complaint is that the bottom keys are taller than the others. However, it is as effective as all keyboards should be. That said, the Function shortcut keys manage things like turning the touchpad on and off, choosing different display options and adjusting volume – and at least the WASD keys are highlighted. Like the design, the keyboard doesn’t have any incredible features that stand out or give it a gaming edge. It’s not only comfortable, ergonomically speaking, with good enough bounce, sufficient travel, and a matte feel to keep your fingers from slipping but it’s also responsive and accurate. We actually like the keyboard on this gaming laptop. You might say that the design is an indication of how this gaming laptop is overall: it’s not the best and it has a couple of flaws, but it does well enough in other areas that you’ll find very little reason to complain. Although our review unit is missing a hard drive, and we wonder how much heavier it gets if there is one. This years Predator Helios 300 boasts a 15-inch 1,500 config with the latest Intel Core i7 CPU, 16GB RAM (expandable to 32GB), 512GB SSD, 240Hz 1080p IPS panel display, and an RTX 2070 Super. The laptop is mid-sized – definitely not small but also not too bulky, and surprisingly lighter than it looks. On top of two USB 2.0 ports and a headphone jack, it also boasts a USB 3.0 port, a USB 3.1 port, an HDMI port, Ethernet and an SD card reader, which definitely comes in handy if you’re using this for your amateur photography and such. So desirable that, as of summer 2022, you can’t actually buy one, the EOS R3 is what happens when a company with Canon’s legendary resources throws absolutely everything at a single product.Ĭanon’s top-end pro models have long been the stuff of dreams for professional and amateur photographers alike – whether the original EOS-1D X, the 1D X Mark III or the EOS 5D – and the EOS R3 will be featuring in the wildest dreams of many a photographer, irrespective of the genre they shoot in. ![]() Why it's a classic: it's one of the most powerful (and best) cameras ever made. We’re thinking in particular here of the top-mounted LCD screen that displayed current shooting information, allowing users to set their camera up – and indeed compose their image via the optical viewfinder – without resorting to the battery-draining, 1.8in rear-mounted screen. There were even a few touches that were positively futuristic, such as the vari-angle screen, as well as some that disappointingly vanished as the compact digital camera developed. It could also shoot raw images as well as JPEGs. The hotshoe on the top was the final great touch, allowing photographers to begin to get to trips with “proper” flashguns. Of interest to ambitious photographers was the inclusion of a manual mode, while the 3x optical zoom (34-102mm converted to 35mm focal lengths, fact-fans) gave plenty of flexibility considering you couldn’t detach the lens. It had a 1/1.8in CCD sensor with 3.24 megapixels, and could shoot apertures between 50 and 400. It wasn’t cheap, but compared to digital SLRs, it represented a more-or-less affordable way to get into high-end digital photography. Born from the ashes of the point-and-shoot film market, compact digital cameras – such as the PowerShot G1 but also the Canon Ixus range – are now all-but dearly departed, usurped by smartphones from below and ever-more capable mirrorless cameras from above.īack in the year 2000, the PowerShot G1 became a big reason (literally and figuratively) why digital cameras enjoyed such widespread appeal. Why it's a classic: it brought DSLR power into your (roomy) pocketĪ moment of silence and a tip of the hat to our dear departed compact camera brethren. ![]() It was this consistency, as much as it was image quality and lens choice, that ensured photographers were able to comfortably navigate the sea-change from film to digital – the EOS 3 is emblematic of that. The mount was consistent until the RF mount came in, of course, but so were the control layouts, the autofocus functionality, the way shooting data was presented in the optical viewfinder and far more. ![]() Perhaps most interestingly – at least to tedious camera nerds like us – is the number of similarities the EOS 3 shares with nearly all of the Canon high-end digital cameras that followed. Further bolstering the EOS 3’s professional credentials was its ability to shoot 4.3 frames per second with its integrated film winding motor you could bump this to 7fps if you attached the optional Canon Powerdrive Booster. That’s a feature that promptly went AWOL from all of Canon’s cameras until the EOS R3. Not only that, the EOS 3 was Canon’s last camera to allow for eye-control AF, in which you could direct it to use a particular autofocus point by simply looking at the area in the frame while you were looking through the viewfinder. With 45 autofocus points spread across the frame, it allowed a huge amount of compositional flexibility. Outside of the EOS-1 range of top-end cameras, it had the most sophisticated autofocus system of any of Canon’s cameras, whether digital or film, until the EOS 5D Mark III. There was a 23-year gap between the Canon EOS 3 and the next-gen Canon EOS R3, but while Canon’s line-up of high-end cameras was slightly the poorer for the want of a 3-series digital camera, the EOS 3 is an interesting product that tied together Canon’s professional and amateur cameras.įirst, the specs: this was a 35mm camera noteworthy, first and foremost, for its autofocus system, which boasted enough tricks you could slap a pointy hat on it and call it a wizard.

Theoretically, the anemometer's speed of rotation should be proportional to the wind speed because the force produced on an object is proportional to the speed of the gas or fluid flowing past it. Because of this asymmetrical force, torque is generated on the anemometer's axis, causing it to spin. 38 on the spherical side and 1.42 on the hollow side, more force is generated on the cup that presenting its hollow side to the wind. Since a hollow hemisphere has a drag coefficient of. With a four-cup anemometer, the wind always has the hollow of one cup presented to it, and is blowing on the back of the opposing cup. This type of instrument is also called a rotational anemometer. Therefore, counting the shaft's revolutions over a set time interval produced a value proportional to the average wind speed for a wide range of speeds. The air flow past the cups in any horizontal direction turned the shaft at a rate roughly proportional to the wind's speed. It consisted of four hemispherical cups on horizontal arms mounted on a vertical shaft.
